What are drain flies?
Drain flies (moth, sewer, or filter flies) are small, fuzzy insects commonly found in properties across the UAE. Their bodies and wings are covered in fine hairs, giving them a moth-like appearance. When crushed, they leave behind a distinctive powdery smudge.
Though they may be mistaken for fruit flies or phorid flies, drain flies are distinguished by their unique habits and breeding environments.
Where do drain flies come from?
Drain flies typically breed in areas with stagnant or contaminated moisture, including:
- Bathroom and kitchen drains
- Sewers and septic tanks
- Soil contaminated with organic waste
In homes and businesses, they are often seen resting on the walls of kitchens, bathrooms, or basements—especially near sinks, bathtubs, and floor drains. While they are most active at night, they do not bite and are not known to spread disease.
What do drain flies feed on?
Drain flies feed on decaying organic matter, grease, and sewage build-up inside drains. Their presence usually indicates an accumulation of waste or sludge inside your plumbing system, often unnoticed until the flies appear.
How to get rid of drain flies
The key to eliminating drain flies is to remove their breeding site:
- Scrub and clean drains using a drain brush or plumbing-safe tool to remove debris
- Use enzyme-based cleaners to break down organic matter in hard-to-reach areas
- Flush with hot water after cleaning to rinse away residue
- Avoid simply killing visible adult flies—they will return if the breeding source remains
Once the breeding site is eliminated, adult drain flies typically disappear within a few days.
