What Are Bed Bugs – Identification, Signs and Treatment

You wake with a row of itchy welts along one forearm and blame the mosquitoes. A week later there are more, and they sit in the same tight cluster. Somewhere between the third broken night and the moment you strip the bed and look properly at the mattress seam, the question of what are bed bugs stops being idle curiosity.

What follows covers the insect itself, the way it travels into apartments and hotel rooms, the traces it leaves on bedding and furniture, the reason shop-bought products so rarely finish the job and what proper treatment involves. Identification comes first, because almost every mistake people make with this pest starts with a wrong guess about what bit them.

The Insect Behind the Bites

An adult is roughly five millimetres long, flat as a seed and coloured somewhere between light tan and deep reddish brown depending on when it last fed. Six legs, no wings. It cannot fly and it cannot jump. Two species bite people. Cimex lectularius belongs to cooler regions and Cimex hemipterus to the tropics, though the tropical species has been spreading through the Middle East for years.

Females glue their eggs into cracks in ones and twos, laying up to five a day and well over five hundred across a lifetime. The eggs are pearly, about a millimetre long and easy to miss entirely. In a warm bedroom they hatch inside a week or so. Nymphs pass through five stages before adulthood and every stage needs a blood meal to progress.

Feeding happens at night, usually takes under ten minutes and normally goes unnoticed because their saliva numbs the skin. The rest of the time they sit still in a harbourage close to the bed. Adults endure months without a meal. Leaving a flat empty for a few weeks doesn’t starve them out, and returning tenants tend to discover that the hard way.

How They Reach Homes and Hotel Rooms in the UAE

Luggage does most of the work. A single mated female zipped into a suitcase in a hotel in Manila or Manchester is enough to start a bed bug infestation in Dubai two days later. Cleanliness has nothing to do with it. The UAE sits on one of the busiest transit corridors in the world, and rooms turn over here faster than almost anywhere.

Second-hand furniture is the other reliable route, particularly mattresses, upholstered chairs and wooden bed frames bought through classifieds. Shared accommodation raises the odds again. In tower blocks and villa compounds the insects walk between units along skirting, service risers and cable runs, so one infested flat becomes a whole floor’s problem if nobody says anything.

Then there is the air conditioning. Interiors here sit between twenty two and twenty six degrees all year, which happens to be close to ideal for breeding. Outdoor temperatures in July are irrelevant to an insect that never goes outside. There is no seasonal lull in the UAE, and the pattern of callouts reflects that.

The Evidence They Leave Behind on Beds and Furniture

Bites are the least reliable evidence available. They appear in lines or clusters on skin exposed during sleep, often the arms, shoulders, neck and ankles, but reactions vary enormously. Some people swell up within hours. Others show nothing at all for a fortnight, and a proportion never react. Bed bug bites on their own prove very little.

The physical traces are what matter. Look along mattress piping and the underside of the seam for dark specks the size of a full stop, which bleed into fabric like ink. Add to that rusty smears from crushed bugs, translucent shed skins, pale egg shells and, in an established case, the bugs themselves wedged into joints in the bed frame.

Search beyond the bed. Headboards bolted to the wall, skirting behind the bed, the seams of a nearby armchair, loose wallpaper, curtain hems and the back of a socket plate all serve as harbourage. A torch and an old bank card to scrape along seams will find more than an unaided glance ever does. Heavy infestations carry a sweet musty smell.

Why Supermarket Sprays Leave the Problem Worse Than Before

Aerosols sold in supermarkets do not eliminate an infestation. Populations across Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East carry resistance mutations that blunt pyrethroids, which is exactly what those cans contain. Bugs walk across a treated surface and survive. The few that die are the ones that were least resistant, which quietly improves the genetics of everything left alive.

Repellent products cause a second problem. Spraying a bed frame drives the colony off it and into wall voids, adjoining rooms and neighbouring flats, so a contained problem in one bedroom spreads through the property. Foggers are the worst offenders of the lot. Dragging an infested mattress out to the skip scatters them along the corridor on the way.

Eggs are the part almost nobody accounts for. Their shells resist most contact insecticides, so a spray that kills every visible adult still leaves a batch due to hatch within days. Six weeks later the room looks worse than it did at the start. Bed bug treatment fails without a plan that covers the entire cycle.

What a Professional Treatment Involves From Start to Finish

A proper job starts with inspection rather than chemicals. A technician maps where the insects are actually living, judges how far the population has spread, identifies the species and checks adjoining rooms before deciding anything. Treating a single bedroom when the flat next door is the source wastes everyone’s money, and that judgement is impossible to make from a photograph.

Treatment then combines methods. Heat raises the whole room to around forty eight degrees and holds it long enough to kill eggs as well as adults, reaching cracks no spray touches. Residual products with rotated active ingredients go into harbourages, steam handles seams and folds, and mattress encasements seal in anything missed.

Preparation and follow-up decide whether it holds. Bedding and clothing go through a hot wash and a hot dryer, clutter gets bagged, and nothing moves between rooms until the work is finished. A second visit around ten to fourteen days later catches late hatchlings. Skip it and you’re likely to pay for the whole thing twice.

In Conclusion

Bed bugs are small nocturnal blood feeders that hitch rides on luggage and used furniture, breed steadily in air-conditioned interiors and hide within a couple of metres of where people sleep. Bites are a hint, spotting and shed skins are the proof. They spread when disturbed, they shrug off common insecticides and their eggs survive treatments that kill every adult in the room.

If any of that matches what you’ve found at home, have it inspected before it moves next door. PROSHIELD has spent more than a decade clearing infestations for homes and businesses across the UAE, using Municipality-approved products and eco-sensitive methods chosen to suit the property and the people living in it.
