Common types of cockroaches in the UAE and how to get rid of them
Cockroaches are among the most common pests found in homes and apartments, notably where sanitation may be lacking. Their presence is not only unpleasant but also potentially harmful. These pests can contaminate food, kitchen utensils, and household products, leaving a lingering foul odour behind.
Because they move freely between dirty and clean areas—such as bins and countertops—cockroaches carry pathogenic microorganisms, spreading illnesses such as food poisoning and bronchial inflammation. Some people are even allergic to cockroach droppings, which can cause skin reactions and respiratory discomfort.
Types of cockroaches found in the UAE
Three main types of cockroach species are commonly found in homes across the UAE. Identifying which type is infesting your space can help you choose the right method of elimination.
1. American cockroach
Despite its name, the American cockroach originated in North Africa. It is commonly found in sewage systems, basements, kitchens, garbage areas, and storage rooms. Outdoors, they inhabit damp, shady areas such as flowerbeds and mulch piles.
American cockroaches have flat, oval-shaped bodies with long antennae and can glide short distances using their wings. They are nocturnal, seeking food at night and hiding during the day. Remarkably, they can survive extended periods without food or water.
2. German cockroach
The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is the most widespread cockroach species worldwide and is commonly found in homes, restaurants, hotels, and healthcare facilities. This species is particularly dangerous due to its fast reproduction and ability to contaminate food, posing serious health risks.
These cockroaches are light tan or golden with two distinctive dark stripes running from the head to the wings. They rarely live outdoors, preferring wall cavities, ceilings, door frames, and inside appliances.
3. Brown-banded cockroach
The brown-banded cockroach (Supella longipalpa) is smaller than the other two types and has light brown bands across its dark brown body. These cockroaches often go unnoticed because their wings may partially obscure their bands.
Brown-banded cockroaches are more commonly found in dry, warm places such as bedrooms, cupboards, and behind picture frames, where they can survive without water for longer periods. They carry bacteria and protozoa that may cause gastroenteritis and diarrhoea.
How to get rid of cockroaches in your home
If you’ve noticed signs of a cockroach infestation—or have already tried various strategies with no success—follow these steps to help take back control of your home:
- Deep clean your home: Focus on food storage areas and places with moisture. Roaches are drawn to warm, humid, and undisturbed spaces.
- Fix all plumbing leaks: Dampness creates the perfect breeding ground for cockroaches.
- Dispose of cardboard boxes: These offer ideal shelter for roaches to lay eggs.
- Store food correctly: Keep leftovers in airtight containers in the fridge or freezer, and avoid leaving dirty dishes overnight.
- Use high-quality insect sprays. Sprays target live cockroaches, so consistent use over a few months may be necessary.
- Apply cockroach powder: Place in corners, doorways, and behind appliances to deter their return.
- Keep lights on overnight. Cockroaches are nocturnal, and disturbing their environment may prompt them to leave in search of darker hiding spots.
